Djerra Joan: Singer, Songwriter, Model and Vintage Fashion Muse

In her whimsical vintage pirate hat, Djerra Joan sailed into ThriftTale's Utrecht store, her bohemian style as unique and striking as her music. With the excitement surrounding her music growing, I finally had the chance to sit down for a chat with the 27-year-old indie singer-songwriter making waves in this year's Popronde festival

Introduce yourself briefly, who is Djerra Joan?

My name is Djerra Joan, originally from Dordrecht, but now living in Amsterdam. I'm a singer/songwriter inspired by 50s jazz and blues, 60s folk and pop, and 70s soul and R&B.

My music is unconventional and pays little attention to traditional norms; I love pureness, rawness and simplicity. Besides my singing and songwriting, I also work as a model who's passionate about dreaming, provoking, and discussing.

How did you get involved with the Popronde festival?

I've been attending Popronde as a visitor for years, it has always been a great place to discover new bands. This year, participating as a performer to showcase my own music, felt like a natural and logical step.

You wear a lot of vintage, what makes it special for you?

Absolutely! I'm incredibly happy that I've escaped the clutches of fast fashion. Vintage shopping feels much more adventurous; it takes you out of your comfort zone and forces you to look with an open mind. For me, vintage shopping is a creative, and sometimes even spiritual process.

Finding something that completely resonates with me and fits perfectly feels almost magical. Moreover, vintage clothing is much cheaper, lasts longer, and is better for the planet. Vintage = timeless.

If you had to describe your clothing style in 3 words, what would they be?

Timeless, earthy, mystical.

What or who is your style inspiration?

I think my style (unconsciously) is a mix of Cher, Stevie Nicks, and Bianca Jagger. I always trust my gut and intuition, also when it comes to fashion. I love timeless clothing - outfits that could have been worn decades or centuries ago. In that sense, I think in a way, I try to somewhat detach myself from everyday fashion.

I draw inspiration from my own takes on what Cleopatra and historical or mythological figures like pirates, samurai, gods, and witches would be like. And although my style is generally quite feminine, I also feel this attraction towards more androgynous looks.

How have you developed your unique personal style?

By making many, many missteps and daring to try all sorts of things! This way, you feel what does and doesn't feel right. When does my personality feel amplified? And when do I not feel entirely like myself?

Sometimes I think something looks stunning on someone else, but as soon as I try it myself, it just doesn't feel right. I've dressed up as all kinds of characters; I think this is part of growing up. But ultimately, all those experiences have helped me get closer to myself.

What makes or breaks an outfit for you?

What makes an outfit are layers and authenticity; you achieve authenticity by staying in tune with yourself.

What breaks an outfit for me is when there's an exaggerated or forced contrast, for example, what's hot at the moment is dresses with sneakers, it's like feminine, but  the sneakers make it edgy/tough. I'm really more a fan of being able to build an outfit with staples and magnify it.

One thing is certain: Djerra Joan is a star, both on stage and off. Her music, clothing style, and character are unconventional, authentic with a touch of fantasy - just like her music.
