Sustainable Fashion at ThriftTale

Shopping sustainably should be easy. You know fast fashion is a problem for the planet and you know the quality just isn't worth it, but it can be so hard to find sustainable alternatives. Vintage shopping might feel overwhelming, and sustainable brands are simply expensive.

That’s where ThriftTale comes in.

We're here to make sustainable shopping accessible and affordable. By removing the hard parts of shopping sustainably, we're being the change the fashion industry needs. From the shopping centers of Utrecht and Enschede to online, you can find sustainable fashion as easily as fast fashion with ThriftTale.

An Accessible, Sustainable Alternative to Fast Fashion

The fashion industry produces 92 million tons of textile waste each year, and most of it comes from fast fashion. Poor-quality garments are made quickly, worn briefly for a month-long microtrend, and discarded just as fast. Contributing to overflowing landfills and wasted resources.

By choosing to shop with ThriftTale, you can help us push fashion towardtrue sustainability.

  • Reducing waste: You keep those pre-loved items in rotation by giving them another chance at life. No new clothes means less in landfills!
  • Reducing pollution: Vintage and pre-loved clothing doesn’t require the energy, water, and resources or produce the fossil fuel pollution that is part of making new clothing.
  • Reducing the demand for new clothing: The only way to create change in the fast fashion industry is to stop buying from it. More people shopping secondhand is the step we all need to take to be truly sustainable.

Vintage Quality, Built to Last

At ThriftTale, true sustainability starts with quality. That’s why every piece of clothing we offer is curated for not just style, but durability from quality designed to last. Because vintage isn’t just about clothes from the past - it’s about creating a wardrobe that also lasts into the future. Clothes you can keep. Clothes you can pass on. Clothes you truly value.

A Fashion Industry That Respects People and the Planet

Fast fashion often comes at a high human cost, with workers around the world facing unsafe conditions and unfair wages, even for so-called luxury brands. By shopping secondhand with ThriftTale, you’re reducing demand for these unethical practices. We value people as much as the planet. At ThriftTale, we proudly employ staff from diverse cultural backgrounds, offering meaningful opportunities to every employee.

Our Sustainability

At ThriftTale, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. From how we source and restore clothing to how we deliver it to your door, we’re committed to reducing waste and carbon emissions at every step.

  • One central warehouse: Our vintage and secondhand clothing is shipped from a single warehouse in the Netherlands. Unlike other secondhand marketplaces for pre-loved and vintage clothing, where each item comes from a different seller, you can buy multiple items from us and have them shipped to you in one package with one delivery fee (or free), and a massively reduced carbon footprint.
  • Repairing: Vintage clothes with small damages, like missing buttons or torn seams, are repaired before being sold. These days, the attitude of "make do and mend” has been forgotten; even thrift stores throw out donations with easily repairable damages. But we’re bringing it back to ensure quality vintage clothing gets a second or third chance at life after a little fix-up.
  • Recycled packaging: Orders from ThriftTale's online store are shipped in recycled packaging. While we normally prefer paper bags, global supply chain disruptions caused by the war in Ukraine mean we’re currently using recycled plastic packaging. It’s a temporary solution, and we’re actively working on even more sustainable options.
  • Eco-conscious couriers: We partner with GLS for deliveries, a courier committed to reducing emissions through electric vehicles and solar-powered operations.
  • Central store locations: Our stores in Utrecht and Enschede are easily accessible by public transport, so you can shop sustainably within walking distance of public transport.

 Shopping Sustainably Easily and Affordably

Sustainable fashion shouldn’t be a luxury, it should be accessible to everyone.

While sustainable brands charge high price tags for producing new clothing, they are not only lower quality than vintage, but still contribute to the global waste problems.

The only truly sustainable clothing is secondhand clothing. Vintage or pre-loved, we should wear the quality clothes that are already out there.

That’s why at ThriftTale, we focus on keeping sustainable shopping both easy and affordable:

  • As affordable as fast fashion: We don't upsell just because it's vintage. You can shop vintage and pre-loved brands at the same budget as fast fashion, but with the quality fabrics and craftsmanship you deserve.
  • Kilo store outlet: At our kilo outlet store, we give a third life to clothing that hasn't sold yet. Things that wouldn't make the cut for our main stores, our online returns, or clothes that are simply out of season. Here, you can shop by the weight for a basket full of vintage bargains.
  • Convenient shopping: Enjoy the convenience of fast fashion with sustainable shopping with ThriftTale. We're breaking down the barriers that keep people from choosing secondhand.
    • Our city-center locations mean you can pop in during your usual shopping trip, with no detours needed.
    • Shop with us online and browse tens of thousands of vintage and pre-loved items, with weekly drops, seasonal collections, discounts, and even next-day delivery.

Shop with us online for vintage clothing and quality secondhand brands delivered worldwide, or visit one of our stores in the Netherlands. Let's be the sustainable change the fashion industry needs.
